Title: What To Do With The Existing Soul
Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
– James 1:21 KJV
We have being talking about โSpiritual Growthโ from the beginning of this month. We have learnt that ifย someone comes to Christ, he becomes a new creation. However, itโs the Spirit of that person that is re-created and becomes new, but the body and soul remain the same. We have also learnt that the Spirit and the Body are in contention over who controls the Soul because whoever controls the Soul, controls your life. Today, we will be focusing on what to do with the already existing Soul who is mature but is more subjective to the body, so he can be more sensitive and subjective to the Spirit.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God (Rom 12:2).
The Soul is made up of the Mind, Will and Emotions. When we consider the mind, it is made up three levels: Conscious, Subconscious and Unconscious. The Conscious mind defines all thoughts and actions within our awareness. For example, the beauty and pleasance of the smell of a rose flower. The Subconscious mind defines all reactions and automatic actions we can become aware of if we think about them. For example, our ability to drive a car. Most of the things we do frequently settles in the Subconscious mind. Unconscious mind defines all past events and memories. These memories in the Unconscious mind are inaccessible to us no matter how hard we try to remember to bring things up. For example, the first word weโve learned to say.
All of us, before we came to Christ, our lives were controlled by the body to think and a do a lot of bad things which have now settled in the subconscious mind and have become part of our lives. The mind works in a Garbage In, Garbage Out (GIGO) system i.e., whatever you put in is what you get out. Now that we have come to Christ, there is therefore the need to reprogram the mind from that of the world to that of a Christian. We can all attest to the fact that this cannot be achieved in day, and thatโs why salvation of the Soul is a process and not a one-day thing.
One Pastor told his story that he used to be a pornographer before he got saved. When he came to Christ, he was taught to love his neighbor. Since the only way to show love to women he knew was to sleep with them, thatโs what he was doing. This continued until he was taught that sleeping with someone you are not married to is a sin. The way the world defines love is even different from that of Christians.
The way of the world is to hate and do evil, but we have to re-program our mind to love. The way of the world is revenge, but we have to re-program our mind to forgive knowing that vengeance belongs to the Lord. The way of the world is to be selfish, but we have to re-program our mind to give to support the Gospel and help the poor. The way of the world is to judge people by appearance, race, and color but we have to re-program our mind to love everyone, knowing that we are all the same in Christ (Gal. 3:28).
How do we then achieve this? The Bible tells us in James 1:21 that receiving and accepting the word of God will lead to the salvation of our souls. We have to therefore spend time regularly reading, studying, and meditating on the word of God. Letโs also find a good and a Bible believing Church to attend and be regular in Church and other Christian Meetings. Listening to Christian messages and reading Christian books and devotions are also helpful. It is very important to note that hearing the word of God without practicing it will not bring any change to our lives. However, when we listen, obey, and put to practice what we learnt, thatโs when we are being transformed to live as children of God. We have to also train the mind to think about things that are noble, just, pure, lovely, godly and of good report (Phil. 4: 8).
Beloved in the Lord, when we come to Christ, our Soul remains the same. The mind which is part of the soul has been fed with a lot of bad information in the past and has to be re-programmed. This is achieved by regular intake and practicing of the word of God. The more we study, obey, and do the word, the more our mind and Will align with that of the Lord and we can then fulfill the Will of God for our lives.
Prayer Point:
Letโs thank God for His Grace and Mercies and for giving us His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ to die for our sins. Letโs ask God to give all believers the desire and hunger for His Word so we can grow. Letโs also ask God to help us to be obedient and doers of the word.
God bless you all.
