And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within. And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.

(Gen 39:11-12 KJV)

The bible was written in such a way that Godโ€™s Truth concerning any situation and the season of life we are in can be discerned by reading the stories in it. These stories and the people are the witnesses that surround us (Heb. 12:1). For this reason, we can be comforted in any situation we find ourselves in when we consider them (Romans 15:4).

Heaven is a different civilization from the earth. In other to help us understand heavenly realities, the Holy Spirit, the Author of scriptures, usually uses earthly things to describe these heavenly realities. For example, wine is used to sometimes describe the Holy Spirit. Paul speaking in Ephesians 5:18, saysย โ€œDo not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit) โ€œ, and Jesus, when inferring to the infilling of the Holy Spirit believers were to receive at rebirth, said, โ€œ… they pourย new wineย into new wineskins. (Mark 2:22)โ€.ย From these, we see how wine is associated with the Holy Spirit. Again, bread and wine are also used to represent the body and blood of Jesus Christ (1Cor. 10:16). In the same manner, clothes or garments are many times used in scriptures to describe works of righteousness, honour, majesty and strength etc (Job 29:14, Rev. 19:8, Isaiah 61:10, Psalm 104:1, and Job 40:10). All these are part of the glory of God. In fact, in Revelation 21: 10 -11, we see how New Jerusalem was said to be clothed with glory, associating clothes to the glory of God.

Just as in the natural, how you are dressed in the Spirit determines how people perceive you; If you are well dressed, it brings glory to you. But if you are not properly dressed, it brings shame to you and makes people despise you. The enemy knowing this spiritual reality unclothes believers and dressed them wrongly in the spirit realm. This was experienced in the bible by Joseph, who was first unclothed by His brothers out of jealousy (Gen 37:12-36), and later unclothed by Potiphar’s wife for refusing to sleep with her (Genesis 39:5-20). His beautiful garment was changed to that of a slave in Potiphar’s house, and later as a prisoner. Because of this, Joseph had to endure being assumed dead by his father (death is a consequence of sin), and after his encounter with Potiphar’s wife, he was seen as a fornicator, liar, betrayer and a wicked person. This fate was not experienced by Joseph alone, but also our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time of his being killed, His garment was removed from Him and was given a different garment (Mark 15:17). As a result, He was seen as a sinner, treated like a murderer, and shamed like a common criminal. Both Jesus and Joseph were without sin, though they had to endure the fate of one who sinned.

Many believers are in the same situation as Joseph and Jesus, unclothed by the lies and wickedness of the enemy as a result of jealousy and hatred, being given different clothes, they have to endure misrepresentation. If you find yourself in that situation, do not despair, there is hope for you. Despite the enemy, and his human accomplices, have ill-intent for their actions, your situation is part of Godโ€™s plan for you. For it was Godโ€™s plan for Joseph and our Lord to be betrayed; It was His strategy for their ascension into a higher realm of glory, the promise to them. For afterwards, Joseph had favour before Pharoah, who gave Him a better garment, that is, greater glory (Gen. 41:1-45), and He lived as the prime minister of Egypt until his death. At His resurrection Jesus was not found naked, He was given better clothing by the Father, a greater glory, which was an answer to the prayer He made in John 17:5. And today, He is at the right hand of the Father (1 Pe. 3:22). As our Lord Jesus and Joseph, restoration is possible for you, ascension into a higher realm of glory. The keys to the restoration are trusting in God amid the situation by being faithful to Him and forgiving those who yielded themselves to be used by the devil. For Jesus forgave those who killed him (Mark 15:29-30), and Joseph his brothers (Gen. 50:15-21).

Prayer Point:

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us to trust in Him in every situation and for Him to give us the grace to forgive all who offend us.ย
