Title: Wisdom of Serpents-Flexibility

Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.

 (Matthew 10:16 NKJV)

One of the things that is constant in life is Change. We go through different seasons and changes in life and some of them can change at any time (Eccl. 3). You may grow old, lose your life, get married, lose your partner, give birth, lose your Child, get a Job, lose your Job etc. We therefore need the wisdom of the Serpent to be able to tackle the change, so it doesn’t break us but rather propels us to a higher level. Serpents are known to thrive in any environment because they are able to change their behavior to suit their current situation. They can live on land and in water and can survive all seasons and adverse weather conditions.

To be able to survive change, we must be very flexible. If we are not flexible with the change, it will break you. There is this famous saying, “the future doesn’t belong to the strong but to those who are best adaptable to Change”. We have to be flexible with seasons and also be able to change our idea or behavior to suit our current situation. In life, it is you who responds to the seasons, but the seasons don’t respond to you. That’s why Apostle Paul advised Timothy to be instant in season and out of season (2 Tim 4:2). In other words, you must be so flexible to the extent that even when you are not ready but it’s the season, you seize the opportunity and seize the moment.

The truth is that many people don’t make progress because they make a lot of plans and wait for the seasons to rather conform to their plans. Some people have planned and arranged their life. For example, “I will first finish my master’s and then get a Job, get married at the age of 30, have Children at the age of 35, and then start a ministry afterwards, etc.” Please don’t misunderstand me, I am not saying we don’t have to Plan our life and Career. We need to plan but we have to also know that in life the seasons don’t always happen logically or sequentially as we have planned. Therefore, we have to be ready to change or adapt our plans to meet the season.

If we are not flexible, we will miss a lot of opportunities that will take over 5 years to get it back. It is even very difficult to be led by the Holy Spirit if you are too rigid. It was my plan to complete my masters, get a Job afterwards and get married at the age of 30. However, when I met my lovely wife Nana, the Lord helped me to discern the season. So, I changed my plans and got married before the age of 30.

Since the seasons come unannounced, we need to have discernment to know when they come and make the necessary changes. For example, Covid is a new season, and every season comes with new opportunities. A lot of activities and services have now been moved Online. Those who were able to adapt to this new season are reaping the benefits while those who couldn’t are suffering loss. Some ministries were borne out of this Covid-season while other ministries crushed because of Covid. The Church must be flexible to adapt to this change and use every opportunity including social media to reach out to souls.

Beloved in the Lord, to be wise as Serpents, we must be flexible and change with seasons because the seasons determine what we do.

Prayer Point:

Let’s thank God for His Word today. Let’s ask God to help all believers in this world to be wise as Serpents. Let’s ask Him to help us to discern the seasons, and be flexible to adapt to them. Let’s also ask the Lord to help us to be obedient to His Word even when it doesn’t go with our own plans.
