Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

Isaiah 7:14 KJV

In a time of increased darkness (increased activities of the enemy), we must learn how to choose good from evil. Therefore, increased discernment is the right thing for us as a body to desire in this time. In my last contribution to the Call to Prayer, I stated that the greatest discernment is one that is based on the word of God. Today, I am going to speak about how that discernment can be developed in us.

Several kinds of discernment exist in the kingdom. There is discernment that is based on the manifestation of one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit called the gift of discernment of spirits (1Cor. 12:10). This is a special ability given to a Christian so he or she can know what spirit is in operation at a particular time. Its manifestation can come in visions and dreams, where the nature of the spirit in operation is revealed. Also, it can manifest as a discernment based on the activation of the sensory organs: in the form of heat, smell, itches etc, which over time the Holy Spirit must have made the bearer of this gift know what each represents. Again, this gift can also operate through the gift of prophecy, where the Holy Spirit tells you what spirit is in operation through a prophetic declaration from another vessel.ย

Though every believer can operate in the gift of discernment of spirits, it is heightened in its operation on those in the office of a Prophet. The manifestation of this gift of the Holy Spirit has been a big blessing to the body of Christ and still is, but it is not a foundation to build on. The realm of dreams, visions and the activation of our sensory organs can be influenced by the devil. We have heard of great Prophets who have fallen into the deception of the enemy.

When prophesying about the coming of Christ, Prophet Isaiah made mention of an activity that He will be engaged in: โ€œButter and honeyย shall he eatโ€, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good (Isaiah 7:14 KJV)โ€.ย Theย statement โ€œto know to refuse the evil, and choose the goodโ€ signifies discernment. Again, butter and honey are symbolic of the word of God, for scriptures says,ย โ€œThe words of his mouth were smoother than butter (Psalm 55:21)โ€ and โ€œHow sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth (Ps 119:103)โ€.ย Finally, we eat the word of God by meditating for long on it.

By spending time meditating on the word consistently, the greatest discernment is developed in us. And by this, we can always recognise what is of the Lord and what is not. And as Jesus Christ when tempted in the wilderness, we will always come out victorious over every deceptive trick of the enemy.

Prayer Point:ย

Letโ€™s thank God for His word today. Let us also ask Him to give the entire body of Christ the grace to spend time meditating on the word of God so we can become fully discerning.
