Title: God’s Mighty Men
By: Daniel Peter
Date: 21.03.2022
And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate! And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem,…. (2Sa 23:15-16 KJV)
O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever! (Deu 5:29 KJV)
We are in a time when God is calling the Church to rise as sons and carry out His desires here on earth. Who are those that can walk in all ways pleasing to Him? What is their make-up? How do we become people of such?
David was a King whose army was trained in a very unique way. In the wilderness, while running from King Saul, who he will later succeed as king, people joined themselves with Him. In observing his life, these same people who before then had no place in the society (1 Sam. 22:2), grew in stature like their leader David. In recounting the exploits of these mighty of David, 2 Samuel 23:15-16 mentioned a time when David expressed a desire, to drink water from a specific well. The problem was, it was a time of war, and the enemy’s army was in the direction of the well. On hearing this desire of David, three individuals, who the Bible called the mighty men, broke through the ranks of the enemy’s army and accessed the well at Bethlehem to get water for David.
Like David, there was a time God expressed a desire. Shortly after giving the children of Israel His commands, the Israelites expressed fear of Him and asked Moses to approach God on their behalf. After this, the Lord expressed a desire, saying “O that there was such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments……(Deu. 5:29”. Like the mighty men of David, those that can fulfil the desires of God, which is to fear God and keep His commandments, are the Lord’s Mighty Men.
Now, how do we become people God considers His mighty men? 2 Samuel 23 contains the accounts of the exploits done by the mighty men of David. The exploits they accomplished revealed their strength. Daniel 11:32 states “….but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits”. Therefore, the first requirement to becoming one of God’s mighty men on the earth is to know Him. Only those who have His knowledge can be one of His mighty men The word translated as “know” in Daniel 11:32 is from the Hebrew word Yada, and it was the same word used when the Bible said, “And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain… (Gen. 4:1)”. Therefore, this kind of knowledge that qualifies you to be a mighty man of God is one that is obtained from your relationship with Him (Intimacy with God).
Finally, the second thing that qualifies you to be a mighty man or woman of God is love for Him. For He said, “If you love me, keep my commands (John 14:15)”. Keeping His commands was the desire He expressed.
