Title: The Lord is my Shepherd

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want (Psalms 23:1 NKJV)

ย

A shepherd is a person who tends, herds, feeds, or guards a flock of sheep. The Lord is a shepherd of His people, and not just an ordinary one but a good Shepherd. A good shepherd is the one who leaves the ninety-nine Sheep to go and search for that one lost Sheep (Luke 15). ย A hired hand will run when he sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they donโ€™t belong to him, and he isnโ€™t their shepherd (John 10:11-12). However, a good shepherd sacrifices his life for his sheep.

Before David went to face Goliath, he talked about times when as a Shepherd, he had to fight with Lions and Bears which came to attack his flock (1 Sam 17:34-37). This prepared him to defeat Goliath and I personally believe that it also qualified him for the Lord to entrust His Sheep (Israelites) to his care. Therefore, if mere human shepherds can go to this extent to sacrifice their lives to protect their flock, how much more our heavenly Father?

David being a shepherd himself knew what it means to be a good shepherd. After realizing where the Lord picked him from and how far the Lord has brought him, and experiencing His love, favor, power, and goodness, he came to the conclusion that the Lord is his shepherd. This made him become totally dependent on the Lord as sheep obey, trust, and follow their shepherd. Thatโ€™s why he was a man after Godโ€™s own heart (1 Sam 13:14).

As children of God, we have to live our lives with the consciousness that the Lord is our Shepherd. How do we achieve this? I believe that intimacy with the Lord and the Holy Spirit is the main key to coming to this realization. The more we spend time with the Lord, the more we know who He is and His great and mighty plans for us. Therefore, even when we experience difficult times, we are so confident that those trial times are not our destination but just preparations for the great plans the Lord have for us. We therefore continue to trust and obey the good shepherd to lead us to a perfect end.

What do you get when the Lord is your Shepherd? The first thing is His provision. He will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Phil 4:19). Our heavenly father who loves us so much is rich and can also do all things. Therefore, even when things seem difficult or impossible in the sight of men, we are not worried because we know who our father is. We depend on Him totally to provide all our needs because He has done it, He keeps doing it and He will surely do it again.

Beloved in the Lord, God is a good Shepherd who cares so much for His Sheep. One thing a good Shepherd does is to provide for His Sheep. He is โ€œJehovah Jirehโ€! I can boldly join David and say that the Lord is my shepherd. What about you?

Prayer Point:

Letโ€™s thank God for His Word today. Letโ€™s ask God to help all Believers around the world to be conscious that He is our Shepherd. Letโ€™s also pray for the desire to be intimate with Him and the Holy Spirit so we can come to this realization.

God bless you all.
