Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy. [12] Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace: (Numbers 25:11-12 KJV)

The place of our heart is crucial to securing the hand of God in our affairs. The status of our heart reflects our beliefs and convictions, the things we hold in high esteem and the things we despise. This is why it is easy to deceive others with a caring outlook whereas the heart is filled with wrath and envy. Little wonder the scriptures in the latter part of Mark 7:6 says “……as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me”.

In our text today, we see the state of the heart in Phineas, Aaron’s grandson. Who couldn’t stand the whoredom and defilement that Zimri, a fellow Israelite was doing in the camp in the sight of everyone. This prompted him to pick up a javelin and killed both the man and woman engaging in the sinful act. Eventhough, the whole congregation was there while the event was unfolding, no one did anything except this young man named Phineas. This was what moved the hand of God to stop the plague ravaging the Israelites and also moved God’s heart to establish a covenant with him and his seeds forever.

Similarly, David had too much zeal in his heart for God and it was evident in his actions because everyone knew including the King that fighting Goliath was a suicide mission but the love of God in David’s heart manifested as zeal and he was so ready to die. No wonder, God also made a covenant with him and his seeds forever.

Are our hearts zealous for Him and His kingdom? What plans have we made for winning souls since the year began? As Christians, the state of our heart must reflect in our engagements in His house and in the promotion of the kingdom. Just like Phineas, let us not wait for others or expect that someone else will do it.

Prayer point:
Let’s thank God for His word and let’s pray that God will renew our hearts and increase our zeal for His kingdom in Jesus name.
