Title: The majority is not always right

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it.”ย Mathew 7:14
Psychology has it from statistical research that human beings are influenced by virtue of internal and external factors: these are necessarily things that drive them to make certain personal or collective decisions. We are social beings that tend to be affected by activities of our friends, colleagues, peers, family members, mentors etc. Environmental tendencies shape our social interaction and to major extend, our decision. The scripture indicates that evil company corrupts good character (1 Corinthians 15:33). If we live with ungodly people there is a high possibility that we might borrow unscriptural lifestyles that displeases God. Miriam was a bad influence to Aaron. She initiated gossip against the servant of God, Moses. In every dispensation, we see that the power of social influence changed people to be good or bad.
Only Lot and his family escaped from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. We see from the fact that he invited the angels that came disguised as strangers to destroy the city to his house, and also that he tried to protect the strangers from the evil men of Sodom who had come to sleep with the strangers, that he was a righteous man. Even though He was a righteous man, the later end was bad because his daughters exhibited some pattern (the idea of getting their father drunk so that he will lay with them) of the ungodly lifestyle which I believe they saw in the unrighteous people they once lived among.ย Caleb and Joshua chose not to follow the majority. Out of the twelve spies that went to spy out the land of Canaan, the two of them stood out of the crowd to give a good report. They eventually got to the promised land while the majority died in the wilderness.
Don’t do bad things just because majority (greater number) of people are doing it. Don’t live in disobedience and sin. Do not pick and spend money that is not your own. Don’t lie to avoid being punished. Do not speak dirty words about leaders and other people because many people do it. Decide to do things because they are right, even if many people are not doing it. Remember, the majority is not always right.
Prayer point:
Let’s thank God for His word. Let’s also pray that He helps us to avoid the unrighteous patterns of life that we may copy from the world through social influence.
