“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” 1 John 4:7-9
As our opening verse explains by showing love, we express that we know God. And if we can’t show love then we in effect do not know God. The bible says “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16). God does not try to love. He is love in its fullness. Again, the bible says “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13). Jesus who is God made man (John 14:8-10) exemplified through his life who God or love is. Imagine being nailed and looking at those nailing you and saying “forgive them for they know not what they are doing”. God indeed loves us immensely (Ephesian 3:18) and this is worth meditating on; being conscious of because you can’t give what you don’t have. God created us and was under no obligation to love us. But yet the mighty creator loves us.
When you come close to anybody, be it a friend or partner, there is a rubbing of character. You learn from each other and then take traits from each other. That’s why the bible says bad company corrupts good character (1 Corinthians 15:33). In a like manner getting closer to God must transform you to be like God. Getting to spend time with Him in His word, prayer, in fellowship and worship must stretch your heart spiritually to love. That’s why saint Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13:
“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, [b] but do not have love, I gain nothing …”
In conclusion, if we can’t love then we don’t know God. But first we must be aware of God’s love for us. An immeasurable love. For from a place of being loved we can love freely.
Prayer Point:
Let’s pray for the consciousness of God’s immense love that surpasses human understanding.
