“This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalms 118:24

Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. But we have today. It is in our hands already; before us to be lived. There are some good times we have had in the past that when we reflect on them, they make us smile. We also have dreams of the future that when we try to get into them through our imagination, they cheer us up and inspire us. However, sometimes I believe we can become too preoccupied dwelling on the past or trying to imagine a better tomorrow that we miss out on what we have before our eyes: The present moment.

Our brother wrote last Friday about the concept of time and seasons. Indeed, there is a time for everything. But whatever season we are in, when we live it out well, it makes the next season better for us. Let us look at the example of a farmer. When it is the planting season, if he plants well, he will harvest well and in the harvest season, if he harvests well, he will have enough to plant in the next season.

Today I will like to attack what I will describe as pessimism about today because of the lack of today. There are some things you have today that might not be there tomorrow. But because you are focused on dwelling on what you lack, you’re missing out on that thing that is available only for this season. For example, a single person may be worried about being single so much that his or her joy is stolen. But then when you are married, there are things you may miss from your single years. Instead of worrying or living in anxiety why not entrust it into God’s hands in prayer and then try to enjoy the present moment? Appreciate what you have now. Take it one day at a time.

The Bible says “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus”. (Philippians 4:6-7)

Take note of the thanksgiving part. When we pray, we should believe God has done it. (Mark 11:24) So we Thank Him for it. Also, try to recognize those things we have now and thank Him for them. As you are recognizing those blessings and thanking God for them you will receive peace and comfort.

From this more restful state, you are able to work better and plant seeds of today for a rich harvest tomorrow. Instead of being paralyzed by worry and anxiety you are now hopeful about tomorrow but can also find comfort in the blessings of today. (e.g., Fresh water and fresh air)

Prayer Point:

Let’s thank God for everything we take for granted. May we all receive the grace to live the present moment. One day at a time.
