and to Jesus, the Mediator of a new covenant [uniting God and man], and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks [of mercy], a better and nobler and more gracious message than the blood of Abel [which cried out for vengeance]. Hebrews 12:24

Our verse for today makes a comparison between the blood of Abel and the blood of Jesus Christ. From Genesis 4 we know the story of how Cain murdered Abel, and God emphasising that the blood of Abel was crying out from the ground (Genesis 4:10). The writer of Hebrews draws our attention to the demands of the blood of two people who were slain. One’s blood is calling for vengeance while the other’s blood is pleading for mercy.

The translation as given by the Amplified Bible makes it clearer what the two bloods are demanding. Ironically, the sinless blood is pleading for mercy whereas the sinful blood is pleading for revenge. It goes on to say that the blood of Jesus speaks better and gracious message than the blood of Abel. What does this tell us? It tells us that mercy overshadows vengeance or revenge in the eyes of God. It is not God’s intention for humanity to be killed or suffer, hence He abounds in mercy.

At the centre of Jesus’ mediation role at the right-hand side of God in heaven is grace and mercy. God is not ready to shoot and kill, strike and destroy. No! That is not His persona. In the heart of God is full of mercy, and this is evident right from the Old Testament where His presence dwelled on the mercy seat on the Ark of covenant (Hebrews 9:5). God knows we do not stand a chance if vengeance, or even justice was to prevail. Beloved reader, God is gracious and merciful. If only you will turn to Him, His mercy will abound for you. God loves you!

Let us thank God for the gift of a new day and the answers to our prayers. Let us pray for the mercies of God to abound at all times.
