 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. ⁴ As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. ⁵ Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. ⁶ But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.⁷ Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. ⁸ Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Mathew 13:3-8

Jesus spoke this parable and gave the explanation to the disciples in this same chapter (Mathew 13:18-23). Following Jesus’ explanation, we can say there are 4 categories of people that hear the word of God. The first is those who don’t understand ( can be for various reasons perhaps they hear it from hypocrites that are contradicting their preaching with actions, or perhaps they still need more encounters e.t.c ). The second is those who believe the word and received it with joy but give up as soon. as problems or persecution come because of the word. The Bible says they don’t last long because “they had no root”. The third is those who because of the worries of this life and the deception(love) of wealth, derail from the path of life. The Bible says the fourth is those who hear the word and understand it. They are the ones who bear fruit some a hundred some a thousand and so on.

Brothers and sisters, the Christian life only begins when we accept Jesus as Lord and savior. As God will have it, most of us don’t die at that time that we accept Jesus so that we don’t just sneak into paradise like the man often described as the “good thief” at the cross. Rather, we start a divine journey. One which we have to stay on the path till the end. As the Lord says, only those who stand till the end will be saved (Mathew 24:13). The question now comes how do you sustain the Christian life?

After accepting Jesus we have to be rooted. Just as the root is the means through which a plant continues to get water and other nutrients to survive, every Christian needs to be rooted to sustain the Christian faith. We are in a battle in this world. The Christian that will survive has to be rooted in the word of God. Are you eating Scriptures daily? The Christian that will survive has to be rooted in prayer. “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”(Mathew 26:41). Do you ever fast just as a spiritual exercise? if no, are you sure you will overcome temptation when it comes?  Last but very very important is that a Christian that will survive must be rooted in a community of believers.(Hebrews 10:25). Are you active in a Church? Have you surrounded yourself with Christian friends that encourage your Christian journey?

Prayer Point: 

Let’s pray that you and I will be Christians that are rooted. So that we continue to bear fruits till the end and don’t fall out of faith because of troubles, persecution, worries of this world, or the desperate love of wealth. Let’s pray that if I have fallen, I should find the grace to start again.
