God’s template for creating man was Himself, for man was created in His Image and Likeness (Gen 1:26). So, if we are to find out how man is to function, we are supposed to look out to God and find out the way He functions. Conforming our lives to His is how we reflect Him on earth.

The creation started with a description of the state of the earth: “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters (Gen. 1:2)”. The word darkenss is from the Hebrew word “chôshek”. It suggests the influence of the kingdom of darkness on the earth. It was the same word that was used in Isaiah 60:2, where the bible stated “For, behold, the darkness (chôshek) shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee (Isaiah 60:2). What this means is that what God was addressing at creation is the same He has called us to address in our world today.

The effect of the kingdom of darkness in our world today is reflected in the disorder in society, the painful situation people go through in life, and every challenge we may experience. As God spoke to bring light to the dark situation of the earth at the beginning, we are to speak to bring about a change in the situation that is contrary to the will of God we are experiencing. However, before God spoke, it was stated that “… the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters (Gen. 1:2). The word hovering is from the Hebrew word “râchaph“, which means “to brood”, that is, to meditate deeply”. And water symbolically represents the word of God. So the words God spoke were products of deep meditation.

As we spend time meditating deeply on the word of God, we will know the right words to speak that will bring about a change in the situation we are dealing with.

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s also ask Him to help us to spend quality time meditating on His word so we will always have the right words to speak in any situation.
