But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.

Numbers 14:24 NIV

Stories in the Bible are pictures to help us see (understand) certain scriptural concepts. One such story is the sending of twelve spies to Canaan by Moses and the report they brought. Ten of the twelve spies spoke negatively about their situation, only Caleb and Joshua spoke hope and encouragement to the people (Numbers 13-14). Israel was denied access to the land for 40 years because they heeded the negative testimony of the ten spies.

The speech of God during the encounter revealed that Caleb, along with Joshua, had a different spirit (Number 14:24). The spirit they had is the spirit of faith, for the spirit of faith is one that agrees with God. Apostle Paul speaking about this spirit and revealing its operations stated: “We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak (2 Cor. 4:13)”. Therefore, speaking words in line with what God has said, despite the contrary situation, reveals the spirit of faith.

Like the Israelites, we encounter giants in the form of challenges in the land (promise) God has called us to inherit, but we must ensure we speak rightly about the situation, so we can inherit the promise. The reason Caleb and Joshua were able to speak rightly about their situation was that they saw God with them and they understood His judgments (Num. 14:9-10). This was different for the other Israelites, who spoke only about the giants with no mention of God in their speech (Num. 13: 32-33).

What are you saying about your situation? Are you speaking faith or fear and doubt? You being able to see God in your situation and being conscious of His presence will impart the grace to speak words that are in line with His will.

Prayer Point:

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s also ask Him to help us see Him in our situation and He should cause us to speak positively at all times.
