Title: The Measure of the Spirit
Name: Daniel Peter
Date: 28.03.2023
And when the man went out to the east with the line in his hand, he measured one thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the water came up to my ankles… Ezekiel 47:3-6NKJV
Several things in scriptures were used to describe the Holy Spirit, and each of them reveals His attributes. For example, the Holy Spirit was described using a dove, so we can understand His gentle nature. Other times He is compared to alcohol, so we will know how He influences us when we are filled with Him. Again, He is described as water to pass the knowledge that He refreshes us and He has other similar attributes as water.
In Ezekiel 47, the Holy Spirit was described as water (a river) whose source is from the throne of God. The angel took Ezekiel to this water and made him step on it at different depths, measuring the depth each time (Eze. 47:3-6). The first depth was up to his ankle, then His knees. After that, it got to his waist. Finally, it became a river that one cannot cross (verse 5). This suggests the different levels or measures of the spirit that is given to us. The measure of the spirit that is available to us is dependent on us, on our willingness to go further in Him.
For example, when Jesus Christ breathed on the disciples in John 20:22, they received a measure of the spirit. However, in Acts 2, that measure was increased when they were baptised with the spirit. Again, that measure was further increased when they prayed in Acts 4 for boldness (Act. 4:31). We see, the measure of the spirit available to the disciples was increasing. However, something was said of Jesus Christ that is important for us to take note of. It was said that He was given the spirit without measure (John 3:34). This suggests the level of the water that one could not be crossed in (Ezekiel 47:5)
Like Jesus, God wants to give us His spirit without measure, and the key to this is love. When Apostle Paul prayed for the Ephesians Church to be strengthened with might by His spirit in their inner man, so they can comprehend the full dimensions of love, the effect of this was that they may ” know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that they may be filled with all the fullness of God “( Eph. 3:14-19). The fullness of God mentioned here suggests His Spirit without measure that helps us to exhibit the character and attributes of God.
When we love like Him, He gives us His Spirit without measure.
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to strengthen us with might by His Spirit in our inner man, and He should help us to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, so we may be filled with His fullness.
