God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:24 NKJV
Worship of God is something we need to carefully consider and understand, so we can do it properly. Many fail in this not because they have the intention to fail, but because they lack specific knowledge that would have helped them to do it properly. Just like the children of Israel foreshadowed by their redemption, for God said “Let my people go, so that they may worship me in the wilderness (Exo. 7:16)”, the purpose of our redemption is so we will worship the Lord.
God is looking for true worshippers, as revealed in His conversation with the Samaritan woman, saying: “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him (John 4:23)”. The word worship in Hebrew is ‘shâchâh’, which means ‘to depress or prostrate before a royalty or God’. And in Greek, the word for worship is ‘proskuneō’, which means to kiss like a dog licking his master’s hand. Dogs perform this act as a demonstration of their submission to their owners and it’s an expression of love. So worship is less about Music and more about our submission to His will because of our love for Him.
The best expression of worship was recorded in Philippians 2:2-4, where it was recorded that Jesus Christ humbled himself and became obedient unto death. So we worship God by humbling ourselves and becoming obedient to Him. For this worship to be considered true, it must be based on the revelation of Christ: His Identity, His works, and His instructions. Which is the truth (John 18:37, John 14:6). You can’t claim to be a true worshipper if you don’t know Him or His works or have His instructions.
The reward for true worship is the Kingdom (Matt. 4:6). And David is an example of a true worshipper, for he was called a man after God’s heart (1 Sam. 13:14). He was after God’s heart to know him and to please him by doing His will.
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to make each member of the body of Christ worship Him properly and in accordance with scriptural patterns.
