Title: Plan with Humility

ย Now listen,ย you who say, โToday or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.โย 14ย Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.ย 15ย Instead, you ought to say, โIf it is the Lordโs will, we will live and do this or that.โ James 4:13-15
The word of God teaches us to be humble. And sometimes many of us believe that we are humble but some little subtle things expose the pride that is still in us. For instance, how often do you hear people talking about their plans confidently without mentioning that it will be done by God’s grace or if God permits. Such manner of speaking could be a symptom of pride and this is what is addressed in the opening verse today.
You might have heard sayings like. “You are a master of your own destiny”, “the way you make your bed so shall you lie”, or “if you fail to plan, you are planing to fail”(from Benjamin Franklin). Indeed you have a responsibility to play over the direction of your future. There is no food for a lazy man. If you don’t sow, you really shouldn’t expect to reap. Planing is good. Having a strategy to accomplish your goals instead of just wishing and dreaming, is practical.
However, does everything depend on how good our plans are? Whether you like it or not, risk factors can never be completely eliminated. You have made all your plans to build a house but are you in control of nature?.ย You can build and the following day there is a flood. With all these things beyond our control is only but wise that we submit our plans to the almighty God as it is said in proverbs 16:3.
In the parable of Jesus in Luke 12:16-21, we see the rich man who made his wonderful plans and was boasting confidently how he will enjoy life after that, only to die that very night. There is only one person that holds the future and that is the almighty God. So whatever plans you have, remember it is still God who will decide if it works or not and it will be wise for us if we include this in our speech for that in itself is also a form of prayer (Jame 4:10, Proverbs 3:6). God resists the proud, but shows favor to the humble (1 Peter 5:5).
Prayer Point:ย
Let’s thank God for His mercy. Let’s pray for the grace to acknowledge the Lord in all we do.
