The reason for our salvation is so that we will become sons of God, for He has chosen us to be heirs with Christ. According to scriptures, one of the identifiers of us being sons is that we are led by the spirit, for scriptures says, those who are led by the spirit are the sons of God (Rom. 8:14). Therefore, discerning the voice of God is an important aspect of our growth in the faith.

The Christian walk can be termed a journey to a point of perfect discernment of the voice of God, and it explains the process the Lord takes us through as individuals. Hearing as a son is different from hearing as a Prophet, for sons have access to His mind (1 Cor. 2:16), and the mind of Christ was demonstrated when Christ submitted Himself to the will of the father, even to the point of death (Phil. 2:5-11). It’s one thing for God to speak, it’s another thing for man to perceive or understand, and obeying that which is heard is another consideration. It is God’s will that we get to the point when we are able to understand fully His voice and submit to His will.

When we spend time in His word (reading and listening), we will attain perfect understanding of His voice. However, to bring us to this point of total submission to His will, there is a sanctifying process the Holy Spirit performs in us, which is also called spiritual circumcision. It is likened to circumcision because just like the removal of the foreskin is a painful process, the Lord causes us to die to our flesh through a process that is painful. The flesh is what hinders us from totally obeying God. The mature in the faith are those ready to do whatever He says.

This explains why God allows us to pass through difficult seasons; the training as sons we receive from the father of spirits (Heb. 12:9-12). The end result of this process is character; the manifestation of His glory. And it is required we yield to Him so it can be completed.

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us yield to Him in the process.
