Wherefore Come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, And touch not the unclean thing; And I will receive you, 2 Corinthians 6:17 KJV

Holiness as a concept is an important aspect of our faith, for the Lord has instructed “Be holy, because I am holy (1 Peter 1:16)”. However, the understanding of what it means to be holy seems to be different among different denominations in the body of Christ. Due to the times we are in (the End Time), it is important we seek to understand what it means to be holy, for scriptures says “Without holiness no one can see God (Hebrew 12:14)“.

More than one word in the Greek language was translated to “holiness” in the New Testament, and each of them suggests the meaning “to be separate, sanctity“. That is, to be holy is to be separate from the world. This call to be separate doesn’t necessarily mean to be physically separate, but to be separate in terms of our practice (our way of living). For example, you may be in a work place where corruption is practiced and excels. By choosing not to participate in corruption, you are separating yourself from them or world despite you may still be in the same office.

This was what Daniel practiced in Babylon, when he chose not to defile himself with the King’s meat (Dan. 1:8). His decision was because according to the Jewish laws, there were certain foods he was not to eat for they were considered unclean. And the king’s meat he was offered was not made following the difference between the clean and unclean as stated in the law. Deciding to live by the word in a world that is lawless is what it means to be holy.
One of the importance of living holy is that you are exempted from the judgement due the world. In Revelation 18:4, there was a call to Christians to separate (come out) from the world. The purpose of this was was “… that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues (Rev. 18:4). Meaning, if you partake in their sins, you will partake in their plague (judgement). If you join fornicators in their practice, you will also partake in their judgement. This is true for any other evil practice in the world today.

As we walk with God, let’s remember that He is holy and He wants us to be holy too. Separating ourselves from the world by the practice of His word is how this is achieved.
