Wait on the LORD: Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.ย

Psalm 27:14 KJV

In the course of our walk with Him, many times, the Lord will cause us to wait for Him. The waiting season isn’t necessarily a comfortable time, but an important aspect of our spiritual development. Knowing how to utilise this season is therefore beneficial.

One of the voices God used to encourage His children to wait on Him was King David, who was a warrior and was always at risk. Though David trusted God for deliverance from His enemies, he knew that sometimes, he had to wait for Him, even in the presence of an advancing army (see Psalm 27). In this area King Saul failed, who was moved to make a sacrifice despite Prophet Samuel asking him to wait. His reason for acting before Samuel’s arrival was that he feared the advancing Army of the Philistines, for He said “…The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering (1 Samuel 13:12)”.

How come David had the boldness to wait upon the Lord despite the enemy’s advancement and King Saul failed in the same situation? The boldness of David came because His focus was on the Lord, for he said, “One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple (Psalm 27:4)”. While King Saul was seeing the enemy, David was beholding God. So David was bold enough to wait while King Saul feared and acted before time.

Like David, as we wait upon the Lord to intervene in our situation, our focus should be on Him and not on that which we are seeking or on the enemy. We see the Lord in the place of intimacy; when we meditate on the word and spend time praying.

Prayer Point:

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us to behold Him while we wait.
