Joab, the greatest general in the Army of David destroyed his path in destiny when he avenged the death of his brother Asahel by killing Abner cunningly in cold blood in a time of peace (2 Sam. 3:27). It was not an honourable thing to do seeing that Abner came to meet with the king and should never have been touched being the king’s guest. David did not forget and that bitterness later cut short his journey in life by dying a shameful death through the command of King Solomon( 1 kings 2:5-6).

You might have been highly hurt and offended that you seem not to recover from the trauma and the pains still lives with you. The only logical thing that may seem right to the human mind to settle the score is to take your own pound of flesh. We are being admonished from this story to let go not because you are weak or lack the capacity to avenge but because of the preservation of our destiny.

Letting go of hurt from your heart relieves you from a burden that you were never meant to carry. A heart that is carrying offense will not pay attention when God is speaking because his focus is somewhere else. Jesus referred to this when teaching his disciples and said “But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses”(Matthew 6:15). When we forgive, we are doing it for ourselves because it removes the legal ground for the enemy to explore in order to bring railing accusations upon us in the courts of heaven.

The verdict of destruction came to pass upon Joab because of the bitterness he kept in his heart just like Cain had towards Abel his brother and ended up with curses from the Lord.

Prayer point:
Let us thank God for the word today. Let us ask for grace to continually have a heart void of offense.
