Whenever someone dies, we sometimes ponder about life and its brevity. You hear statements like “life is nothing”, “Vanity upon vanity”. But do we really reflect? Does dying really mean the end? Or is there a life after death? If I die today, where would I go to? 

Naturally most people make plans. They plan about the next 5 years. They plan about their retirement, but have you planned your eternity? The bible lets us know that there is life after death and it’s either in a place of eternal happiness or eternal damnation (Mathew 45:46, Jude 1:7, Psalms 9:17 etc), heaven or hell. Nobody goes to either of these places by mistake or chance. Since we don’t have access to the same knowledge, each one will be judged according to what you knew because this is part of the things we are given (Luke 12:47-48). If we believe this truth, how then must we live?  

The first important thing to do is to guarantee your access into heaven by believing and professing that Jesus is your Lord and saviour who died for our sins so that you may have eternal life if you believe (John 3:16). As simple as this sounds this is how to be saved (Ephesians 2:8-9 ).

The next step is that once you are registered in the kingdom of God there is work that was already prepared for you (Ephesians 2:10). There is accessible grace to do it through abiding in Christ (John 15:5). The more you utilize this grace and do your assignments, the more your treasures will be first in heaven and on earth (Matthew 6:19-21, Proverbs 11:31, Matthew 16:27, Hebrews 11:6). This is the reward system of God. We don’t enter heaven by merit but through faith in Christ Jesus however rewards in heaven are through submission and obedience after you received salvation. Meanwhile on the other hand, those who do some good deeds and yet vehemently deny God’s way to heaven which is Jesus will receive their praises and rewards on earth only. Look at this example, normally you can’t be paid if you are not an employee no matter how much you work. By being saved, you are registered as an employee of heaven. 

So, let’s live with an eternal view. As you work for your comfort on earth don’t forget to invest in the afterlife which starts by accepting Jesus as Lord and saviour and then loving(giving) as He as commanded. Now, what if all this is not true and I die, then I lose a life of sacrifices (although I still gain a lot) but if it is true then I gain a joyful eternity and surely you agree the converse is horrifying.  

Prayer Point: 

Let’s pray for the grace to always reflect about eternity and adjust our lives accordingly. Let’s also pray for the grace to abide in Christ to rest in Him and obtain grace to bear fruits.
