For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor so that you through his poverty might become rich
ย 2 Corinthians 8:9ย NIV

I once attended a ministry where they taught that to be financially wealthy is not God’s will for Christians, and most of the people in the ministry, including the pastor, have made poverty vows. Though their resolve seems modest, it’s religious deception.

Finding statements in scriptures like “money is the root of all evil (1 Tim. 6:19)” or “… it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone rich to enter the kingdom of God (Matt. 19:24)” may pass the idea that to be financially wealthy or the desire of it is not the will of God, but this isn’t true, as most of the people God used in scriptures became financially wealthy. For example, Abraham was blessed financially by God, to the extent that he rejected the financial offer of the king of Sodom so that people would not mistake the source of his wealth (Gen. 14:23). And the blessing of Abraham (which included financial prosperity), is the inheritance of every Christian (Gal. 3:13-14 ).

The price Jesus Christ paid for us went beyond the physical pain He endured. Scriptures say “… for your sake, he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich (2 Cor. 8:9)”. If Jesus has paid the price for us to be rich, it means being rich (financially prosperous) is God’s will for us. God is not against us having wealth, but He doesn’t want us to love wealth more than Him. The love for money is the root of evil, not money itself. Kenneth E. Hagin shared in one of his books how an angel in charge of financial prosperity visited him and told him about a coming financial inflow to his ministry. If God assigns angels to help us to be financially prosperous, then money in itself is not evil.

God doesn’t want us to trust in wealth but in Him. This was the basis of the test of the rich young man, who was asked to give all he owned to the poor and follow Jesus (Matt 19:21). When we can let go of that which we have (money) to follow Jesus, then we trust Him indeed. Guess what? He promised to give us 100 times more of whatever we give up for him. Therefore, the rich young did lose out on the opportunity to become 100 times richer (Mark 10:30).

Prayer Point.

Let’s thank the Lord for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us believe the truth of the Gospel and to trust Him for financial prosperity.
