Title: Humility

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” 1 Peter 5 NIV 

Humility is one of those key virtues that opens us up to whole lots of other virtues. Jesus says “… learn from me for I am gentle and humble of heart” (Mathew 11:29). You can meet a person that is as bad as you can imagine but if there is still some humility in him, I tell you, there is still a lot of hope for him (although sin hardens the heart). 

Throughout scripture humility is emphasised again and again. In fact, did you know it is the absence of humility that makes the devil who he is? (Ezekial 28: 11-19, Isaiah 14:13-17). Just imagine what the opening verse says “… God opposes the proud”. If God opposes you how you can you stand. How terrible ! 

There are so many advantages that come through humility. Humility attracts grace while pride attracts judgement. This is both from God and men. Look at these examples from scriptures Luke 18:9-14, Luke 23:39-43 and Genesis 33. Being humble will also position you for exultation because men as well as God want to exalt those who are humble. That’s why even unbelievers that have understood this principle apply this as wisdom and express humility just to get exultation from men and so must we, except that ours should come from the heart and be motivated by love (Luke 14:10, John 13:14). Last one to mention is humility will lead you to rest just as Jesus implied in Matthew 11:28-30. 

We express humility by through respect and honoring others. Through obedience to instructions. The bible says Jesus humbled himself and was obedient even to the point of dying (Philippians 2:8).  Through service.

Just as with all virtues, we grow in humility as we continue to abide in Christ. So, as we continue to pray, hear the word, practice service and giving, our capacity to humble ourselves grows and that’s how we are able to express more humility that attracts favor. Another key to growing in humility is growing in our understanding and confidence in who we are in Christ Jesus and nothing else (John 13:3-5, Revelation 1:6-7, Revelation 5:10 ).  

Prayer Point:  

Let’s thank God for the word today. Let’s pray for the grace to pray more to grow in humility.
