Call to Prayer

Title: Greatness

By: Daniel Peter

Since he was the greatest hunter in the world, his name became proverbial. People would say, โ€œThis man is like Nimrod, the greatest hunter in the world.โ€
Genesis 10:9 NLT

There’s a natural desire to be great in the heart of every man. This desire was placed in us by God, who created us in His image and likeness, and He called Himself a great king (Mal. 1:14). This seed of greatness in us needs to be activated (watered to grow), and there are certain kingdom patterns (principles) we need to be aligned with before we can manifest it.

Many times, the reason strife exists among men is because of their desire to be greater than the other. This was also seen among Jesus’ disciples, who quarrelled about who would be the greatest among them (Mark 9:33 -37). Jesus’ response to the disciple’s argument showed the importance of the subject of greatness, for He did not rebuke their desire to be great, rather He taught them how to be great. In the body of Christ today, there have been divisions caused by strife among God’s ministers. Many times, the root of this strife is the desire to be seen as great or greater than another.

Furthermore, manifesting greatness is not about being righteous. Nimrod was called great (mighty) by God (Gen 10: 8-9), yet he was not building the kingdom of God but Babel. If we look around our world today, many people doing great things are not necessarily Christians. For example, Elon Musk and Sam Altman are not Christians presently but we can’t deny their greatness through their achievements. This is because the principles that make great are universal; they work in the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Darkness (or the world) when applied.

Based on the Scriptures and revelation through personal encounters with Him, greatness is attained by one with a heart of honour and service. When Jesus Christ addressed the disciple’s argument about who would be the greatest, what He did was to teach them honour and service (Mark 9:33 -37). The concept of one becoming the least or the first becoming last is about taking the position of a servant and esteeming others better than themselves.

When you find one who looks down on others and feels offended when called to serve, you have found one who is small. One who will be great in life honours others and humbles himself or herself to serve. For God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (1 Peter 5:5).

Prayer Point:

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us develop the heart of honour and service
