Title: The Fear of God
By: Daniel Peter
Date: 29.07.2024
โDonโt be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.โ
Matthew 10:28 NLT
Matthew 10:28 NLT
The fear of the Lord is a virtue that seems to be missing in a large section of the Church today. Because of the revelation of grace and God’s merciful and forgiving nature that we have received in the New Covenant, many Christians do not show restraint, because they think that God will forgive them their wrongs.
This error is also encouraged by preachers who interpret the fear of the Lord to be reverence for God only. Even though one of the meanings of the word “fear” as used in Matthew 10:28 is “reverence,” it also means “to be afraid of” or “to be frightened.” Knowing this, a believer will show restraint and take responsibility to sincerely repent when he or she falls short.
To further emphasize this, when Jesus Christ talked about fearing God, He said, “… Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell (Matt. 10:28).” Also, when Apostle Peter was encouraging the Church to leave sin, he used the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah as an example of what will happen to the ungodly (2 Peter 2:6). This was also expressed by Jude in Jude 1:7-18.
The truth that God still judges sin and should be feared was seen in the judgment of Ananias and Sapphira, when they lied about the amount they sold their land. Again, Apostle Paul handed one of the believers in the Corinthian Church over to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so his spirit would be saved in the last day (1 Cor. 5:5), and he also revealed how some in the Church were weak, sick, and slept (died) because they could not discern the body of Christ (1 Cor. 11:30-34). Yes, God forgives sins, but he also judges.
In conclusion, I define the fear of the Lord as the restriction we put on ourselves because we know that there are consequences of sin and because we love Him.
