There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from His.
Hebrews 4:9-10 NIV
The journey from Moses to Jesus is a journey from labouring to please God so you can access His blessings (including eternal life), to entering into God’s rest, where we know He is pleased with us simply because we believe and have access to all.
The law of Moses is only abolished for those who believe the Gospel (Romans 10:4), which means for those who don’t, it remains active. Belief is a function of knowledge, so in areas where you lack knowledge of what Christ has done, you may lack the grace for rest. This is why many believers still have similar experiences to those under the law (James 2:9).
As it relates to salvation, we are saved simply by grace through faith and not by our works (Ephesians 2:8-10). Yet, many believers practice righteousness or holiness to be saved or to make heaven, as some put it. Despite sounding pious, they are in error and depend on their righteousness for salvation.
The moment we believed in Jesus, eternal life was imparted into our Spirits, and we received His righteousness as a gift (John 3:16, 2 Corinthians 5:21). Though the manifestation of this gift of Righteousness, in the form of righteous works, is progressive and dependent on spiritual maturity, the believer is saved throughout the process. This means we don’t practice righteousness or holiness to be saved or to make heaven but because we are saved. A Christian is already in heaven because we are seated with Him in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:1, 4-7).
Trying to please God or make heaven through your works means you depend on your righteousness, not His. But simply believing you are saved by faith in Him delivers you from labouring to be saved or make heaven. As you stay in fellowship with Him, believing you are saved, you are empowered to manifest His righteousness in the form of righteous works.
A Christian is not one trying to make heaven; a Christian is already in heaven.
