โDo not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20ย But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21ย For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.โ ย Matthew 6:19-22
Sometimes we as believers can forget that charity is an opportunity to invest and not just a sacrifice. While the world encourages hoarding and amassing of wealth, the word encourages and challenges us to give and share. It almost looks as though it is reason versus faith until you think it through properly. The word does not say you should not eat the fruit of your labour rather it says every worker deserves to eat (2 Thessalonians 3:10, 1 Timothy 5:18). However we often have more than we need and God can increase your capacity to produce far more than you need if you trust Him (2 Corinthians 9:8). So rather than spending your life keeping, the wisdom from above is that you invest that excess into Godโs kingdom through acts of love and charity.ย
As believers, we are to grow in charity as it is an expression of our growth in faith and love. The rewards for charity are twofold; first and foremost as mentioned earlier whenever you do an act of charity you are investing in your eternity. We can be both saved by faith in Christ Jesus; does not mean that we will have the same riches in heaven. ย As Jesus has said in the opening verse, you have a role in building your treasures in heaven. The second aspect is what can summarised as earthly rewards.ย
The earthly rewards of charity can come in the form of grace for multiplication. The word says: “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”(Luke 6:38). A closed hand cannot receive but an open hand gives and receives even more. Proverbs 19:17 directly says โWhoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.โ
While being generous to your family and friends is good and can build solid bonds, it is not where our generosity should end. We are challenged to trust Godโs word and be generous to those we know canโt repay us and watch as God repays you in this life even as you are assured of your rewards in heaven.ย
Prayer Point:
Letโs thank God for His word today. Letโs pray for a growth in faith and wisdom that produces growth in charity and love.
