Morality or Rulership?
Call to Prayer
Topic: Morality of Rulership?

Then God said, โLet us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.โ ย (Genesis 1:26 NIV)
For some time now, I have been pondering the present state of the Church, and it seems to me that a section has lost God’s original mandate for us. There is a dire need to reclaim that mandate, for only then can we fulfill His purpose for us on earth.
Contrary to popular opinion, the Church isn’t a religious organization but a government. The word “Church” as used in the New Testament was translated from the Greek word “Ekklesia,” which refers to a form of government where citizens of a city gather to decide political issues (Acts 19:32-41). In essence, Church meetings in the Greek setting were for ruling. This was the idea God had in mind when He called us the Church.
For many years, morality, character development, and ensuring one makes heaven (as some put it) have been the focus of the message. However, God expects more from us, and that more is that we rule. When God created Adam, He said, “Let us make man in our image and likeness” (Genesis 1:26). The image of God speaks of the character of God. That is, we were created to have the character of God. However, the reason God created us to have His character was so that we can rule, for the Bible continues, saying: “Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth” (Genesis 1:26). Dominion speaks of rulership.
At the death and resurrection of Christ, this mandate of ruling has been reclaimed in Him. When Jesus Christ said, “Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 18:18), and “If two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven” (Matthew 18:19 KJV), He was revealing the governmental nature of the authority He has given us and how to exercise that authority in making decisions for the purpose of ruling.
Though we are in a dark world, He has called us the light of the world (Matthew 5:14-16). And since light rules over darkness (John 1:5), we are truly shining if we are ruling. Therefore, though morality is good, as we are to manifest the character of God, ruling is God’s purpose on earth for us, and this should be emphasized.
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for His world today. Let’s ask Him to help the Church walk in the fullness of her ordination.
