And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.   (2 Corinthians 3:18 NIV)
Some years ago, the Lord told me, “Creation is still ongoing.” Though the book of Genesis started with how God created the earth and all in it in six days and rested on the seventh (Genesis 2:2-3), when Jesus Christ manifested as a man, He said, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working” (John 5:17 NIV), when He was questioned about healing on the Sabbath.
When the Godhead decided to make man, the agreed pattern for man was that he would be in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26). However, when man manifested on earth, he had not yet attained the fullness of the likeness of God, for he was not yet like God in the ability to live forever (Genesis 3:22), in knowing good and evil (Genesis 3:5), and in other attributes that the trees in the garden gave when he partook of them.
So, if Adam had not yet attained the fullness of the image and likeness of God when he manifested on earth, what plans did God have to help him become that which was purposed for him in Genesis 1? In 2 Corinthians 3:18, Apostle Paul wrote, “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit” (NIV). This means that as we see Jesus Christ, who is the very image and likeness of God (Hebrews 1:3), we become like Him in all aspects. That is, we are transformed into the image we behold, and it is a continuous process.
So, for man to be like God in His ability to love, he has to see the love of God manifested. The greatest love is demonstrated when the person being loved isn’t worthy of it (Romans 5:8). So, when man sinned by partaking of the forbidden fruit, it gave God the opportunity to reveal His love to humanity by sending His Son to die for our sins (John 3:16). When we behold this love, we’ll receive the same capacity to love like God, attaining to His image and likeness in this regard.
Therefore, the fall of Adam was God’s will (Romans 11:32), and this was why He made provision for his redemption even before the foundations of the earth (Revelation 13:8, Ephesians 1:4-5). The purpose is for us to see His love through forgiveness, and thereby be transformed into His image and likeness. This ongoing creation process continues as souls are won into the kingdom, gaining knowledge of Christ and understanding of His work on the cross.
