And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:2 KJV)

Anyone that has ever hunted down wild boars or foxes, worked in a slaughter house, lives in society where they are allowed to kill chickens or any other animal will feel a degree of pity or compassion the first time they do it but if they continue, they become desensitised and will do it without thinking too much about it. The same goes for a soldier in the battlefield. It is human nature to adjust or adapt to its environment. This evolutionary trait is key to survival in the habitat they have found themselves.

As believers, we are not allowed to adjust or adapt to the things of this world (Rom.12:2). There is an identity that we carry that must not be distorted by the society we live in or things that are happening around us. For instance, it has become normal in the society we live in today to reveal as much as possible when we dress and this has been deemed fashionable. They have a saying that goes: โ€œif youโ€™ve got it, flaunt itโ€

Desensitization to the things of God and His commandments corrodes the mind. It makes abnormal things look normal over time because you are exposed to it constantly and you start lowering your guards to accommodate what looks like the new reality. This is why a lot of intending couples fall into the sin of fornication before coming to the altar. This is also why watching movies with sexual scenes on Netflix now looks normal to a Christian.

Another area our minds that can be desensitised is to the suffering of others. We must have compassion like our Lord Jesus Christ who went about doing good and healing all that are oppressed by the devil (Acts 10:38). Before you start thinking it was the fault of the poor to be in that state, the bible thinks otherwise that he that considers the poor will enjoy divine privileges from the Lord(Ps 41:1-3).

Unsaved souls are everywhere and we must be sensitive to this agenda of the kingdom and not see it as someone elseโ€™s work to do. Our hearts must be tender enough to run after lost souls and bring them to the kingdom of God. Rather than wait for when evangelism is called for, we must see it as a personal duty and engage as much as possible everywhere we go because that is what the Lord has commanded us to do (Mark 16:15).

The word of God is the only source that can keep our mind renewed and prevent it from decadence. The world is constantly trying to desensitise our hearts but we must plug into the word daily to keep our mind intact according to the standards of the kingdom of God.

Prayer point:

Let us thank God for His word today. Letโ€™s pray for the renewing power of the Word to keep our hearts and mind at all times.
