Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.”
(1 Corinthians 13:4 NIV)
The image and likeness of God is love, for God is love (1 John 4:8). Since we were created in His image and likeness, we can say God meant for humans to be creatures of love. When mankind fell, there was a manifestation of wickedness on earth due to the sin nature. However, in Christ, there is the restoration of God’s original purpose for man to be as He originally intended – love creatures.
When Apostle Paul was describing love, his first mention was “love is patient” (1 Corinthians 13:4). The word “patience” was translated from the Greek word “makrothymรฉล“, and it means to be long-spirited; to forbear, long-suffering. This is a quality that enables us to endure the wrongs of others or unpleasant situations without being angry. Scripture affirms that God demonstrated this quality when it said, “…in His forbearance He had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished” (Romans 3:25 NIV). We are also commanded to forbear one another (Colossians 3:13).
To help us develop patience, God would many times allow us to endure unpleasant situations for a long time. This is what some have called the waiting season – waiting on God to fulfill His promises or turn our situation around. The entire trials of Job were called “the patience of Job” in the scriptures (James 5:11), revealing the relationship between trials and patience.
We can’t reflect God if we are not patient, for being patient is an attribute of love. Again, without patience, one cannot inherit promises, for Scripture says, “…imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised” (Hebrews 6:12 NIV). The benefits of being patient are immeasurable, which was why James said we should count it all joy when we go through trials (James 1:2-3).
Be joyful despite the pain because patience is being formed in you.
