But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. (James 1:4)
The life of Joseph gives us a view of a man that had unwavering faith about the dream he had received from God and he was willing to wait patiently for it. He endured years of betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment before becoming a ruler in Egypt. His faith in God kept him patient through the hardships.
Faith and patience are two powerful virtues that go hand in hand in the life of a believer. Faith is the confident trust in Godโs promises, while patience is the endurance to wait for those promises to come to pass. Many times, our faith is tested because Godโs timing does not align with our expectations. Yet, it is in the waiting that our faith is strengthened and our character refined.
According to our opening text, patience strengthens our character. Waiting on God is not a passive experience but an opportunity for growth. Every trial, every delay, and every unanswered prayer shapes us into the people God wants us to be. Just as a tree grows deeper roots in the midst of strong winds, our patience in trials deepens our faith. Faith is evidenced in trust (Hebrews 11:1 ). Faith calls us to trust in God even when we cannot see the outcome. Abraham is another great exampleโhe was promised a son, yet he waited twenty-five years for Isaac to be born. During that time, he faced doubts and challenges, but he held onto Godโs promise. His faith was not in his circumstances but in the faithfulness of God.
To grow in faith through patience is to trust Godโs timing because He makes all things beautiful in His time (Ecc. 3:11). We must also stay Rooted in the Word of God because faith comes by hearing (Rom. 10:17). This will give us assurance during the waiting period. Additionally we must seek the Lord with the whole of our heart, so we can find Him because He is always there. Finally, we must be focused and persevere during trying times like Joseph and not give in to despair or weariness because we are only crowned at the end.
Prayer point:
Letโs thank God for His word today. Letโs pray for strength to trust Him to the end in faith and in patience.
