Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control. (Proverbs 25:28)

When we look at the prison systems and correctional facilities in our respective countries, we will find a lot of men and women who lost their freedom due to lack of self control. This could be through untamed desires or inability to be in charge of their emotions like anger through the help of the Holy Spirit. Many times when we go through tests, self control is most times an area we would be tested and Satan knows it is very difficult to overcome the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life.

Without self-control, we are vulnerable to temptation, sin, and emotional instability. Just like a city without walls, it will be open to attack. The word of God teaches us that self-control is not merely about willpower but about surrendering to the Holy Spirit. When we try to exercise self-discipline in our own strength, we often fail. However, when we rely on God, He empowers us to resist sin, control our impulses, and walk in righteousness.

One area where self-control is crucial is in our speech. James 3:5 warns that โ€œthe tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.โ€ Harsh words, gossip, and complaining can cause great harm, but when we allow the Spirit to guide our words, we speak life instead of destruction.

Another key area is our thoughts. In 2 Cor. 10:5, we are instructed to take every thought captive to obey Christ. Our minds can easily be filled with anxiety, lust, pride, or negativity. But through prayer and meditation on Scripture, we can renew our minds and cultivate self-control over our thoughts.

Self-control also applies to our actions. In moments of temptation, whether in areas of anger, greed, addiction, or lust, we must remember that God provides a way out (1 Cor. 10:13). When we choose obedience over impulse, we grow stronger in our faith. Conclusively, self-control is about living in alignment with Godโ€™s will rather than being ruled by our desires. As we submit to the Holy Spirit daily, He transforms us to reflect Christ more fully.

Prayer Point:

Let us thank God for His word today.ย  Lord, help me to walk in self-control. Strengthen me through Your Spirit so that I donโ€™t succumb to the flesh.
