And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested. 1 Chronicles 4:10 (KJV)
Names and proclamations are very significant both in the physical and in the spiritual. Particular attention therefore needs to be taken because they have a way of shaping our realities. When people call us by a certain name or make negative pronouncements and we do not accept those labels, they will never become our reality (Pro. 26:2). But the moment we embrace them, they begin to shape who we are. We have the power to reject every pronouncement that is not of God in our lives. This is the parallel that we see in scriptures about men who God had to change their names before He could manifest His purposes through them.
The story of Jabez stands as a profound example of someone who rose above limiting circumstances and labels. Though his name meant “sorrow,” Jabez did not allow that to define his future. He cried out to God with faith, asking for divine blessing, territory, presence, and protection. Our opening text today tells us that “God granted him that which he requested.”
Our future is defined by the faith we place in God’s ability to transform and lead us. Like Jabez, God is inviting us to approach Him boldly, to ask for more, not out of greed but out of a desire to walk in His purpose. We are who God says we are in Him and that supercedes everything else.
In the same way, God renamed Abram to Abraham, shifting his identity to align with divine destiny, God is still rewriting names and stories today. When we surrender to His will and reject every name, label, or limitation that contradicts His Word, we walk into the fullness of our calling. My prayer today is that only the plan and purpose of God will be established in our lives and that our God will give us a new name that aligns with our destiny.
Prayer point:
Let us thank God for His word today. Let’s reject every identity not aligned with His Word, and receive the name, the purpose, and the future that He has ordained for us.
