The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out. Every morning the priest is to add firewood and arrange the burnt offering on the fire and burn the fat of the fellowship offerings on it.
Leviticus 6:12 NIV

When Moses gave the law to the children of Israel, he instructed the priests to ensure that there was always a fire burning on the altar. They were to do this by adding wood to the burning fire to keep it going. If you have made a fire before, you know that there may be times when the flames need to be fanned, especially when they are about to go out, to keep them burning. So, we fan the flames to keep the fire alive.

As we know, the Old Testament is a figure of the reality that exists in the New Testament. When Jesus manifested as a man, He said to His disciples, “You are the light of the world…” (Matthew 5:14, 16). At the time He made this statement, there was no electricity in Israel. So, the only sources of light, apart from the sun and the moon, were fires burning from various fuel sources. To the Jews, when light was mentioned, fire comes to mind.

Every Christian is a fire, though we burn at different degrees. To burn brighter, we may need to fan the flames. The devil is always trying to put out the light of a Christian. Like the priests in the Old Covenant, we must continually add the wood of the Word daily to sustain the flames. When we spend time with the Lord, praying and meditating on Him through what is written in the Word, the flames of the fire of our lives burn brighter.

Even in the midst of life’s trials—the winds that the enemy brings to quench our fire—we must ensure we keep hearing and meditating on the Word. In this way, our lights will stay on, burning brighter and brighter.
