Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. [5] Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. (Revelation 2:4-5)

In our journey with Christ, there are often no dramatic sins or obvious disobedience to show the beginning of our drift from Him. More often, it starts subtly. The contentions in our spiritual walk are not always battles with evil; sometimes they come dressed as daily distractions, emotional wounds and bruised feelings, or a loss of energy and passion for the things of God. These are the “little foxes” that spoil the vine, things that go unnoticed until our hearts feel distant from the One we once pursued with all our heart.

Spiritual complacency can creep in quietly. What once generated prayer, worship, and the study of the Word can become routine, even mundane. Familiarity with God’s presence, if unchecked, can lead to a reduction in our reverence of Him. We begin to postpone our devotions, delay obedience, or stop paying attention to convictions. Our once passionate relationship becomes a matter of obligation, and gradually, our love fades.

Jesus speaks to the church in Ephesus with a clarity: “You have left your first love.” He doesn’t accuse them of abandoning doctrine or works. They were still active, but they had lost the heart behind it. This warning is not just about behavior but about affection. Our Savior desires not only our service but our hearts. He calls us to remember, to repent, and to return.

Remember the sweetness of your early days with Christ when prayer was not a chore or activity but a joy, when worship brought tears, and when obedience flowed from love, not duty. Reflect on what changed. Was it hurt caused by someone you trusted in the body of Christ? Was it disappointment with God’s timing? Please identify the foxes.

After identifying the cause, then repent. Not with condemnation, but with humility. God’s call to repentance is always an invitation to restoration and not rejection. Finally, return and do the first works again. Seek Him, love Him, follow Him not out of habit, but with renewed hunger and they that seek Him shall find Him.

Prayer point:

Let’s thank God for His word today. Lord, please rekindle my love for You. Take me back to where we started.
