Prayer is not just speaking to God, it is communion with Him. To receive answers, we must understand both what to pray and how to pray, aligning ourselves with the will of God.

A few days ago, while I was in the bathroom, a thought came to my heart: Am I even praying the right way? Are my prayers in alignment with God’s mind and purpose for my life? Am I praying effectively enough to receive answers?

Then it became clear to me: not every prayer is the same. Some people need to cry out for mercy (Luke 18:13 “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!”), others may need a prayer of consecration (Luke 22:42 “Not my will, but yours be done”), while others may need to offer thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6), or pray for sanctification (1 Thessalonians 5:23). Etc

The Bible teaches us in Matthew 6:33: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” This reminds us that our prayers must be kingdom focused first, not just self-centered.

We are also reminded in Romans 8:26 that “We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” This is why it is vital to pray in the Spirit, relying on the Holy Spirit to guide our petitions according to the will of God.

The apostle James warns us: “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures” (James 4:3). Praying amiss, praying outside the will of God leads to frustration and unanswered prayers.

Therefore, I admonish us: before we pray, seek to know the mind of God concerning our lives. Spend time in the Word, listen to the Spirit, and ask God to align your desires with His purpose.

As we grow in understanding and spiritual sensitivity, our prayers will shift from mere requests to powerful conversations that produce fruit and draw us closer to the heart of the Father.
