Obstacles to being a Doer of the Word

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves

– James 1:22 KJV

In last week’s call to prayer, I shared a message titled, “Be a Doer of the Word.” We learnt that, we can easily be listeners, teachers, and preachers of the word but what the Lord really requires of us is to be doers of the word. Our Lord Jesus Christ, while on earth also spent time teaching and admonishing us to be doers of the word.  

“But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it (Luke 11:28), And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?(Luke 6:46), And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.(Luke 8:21), Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock (Matthew 7:24), Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven (Matthew 7:21).” However, there are some obstacles that prevent many Believers from being doers of the word.

One of the obstacles is lack of knowledge and understanding of the word of God. Majority of Christians don’t know the word and those who know don’t really understand what the Lord of requires us. Since we don’t know the word, we can’t do what it says (Matthew 22:29). Beloved, I encourage you to spend regular time studying the word, be regular in Church and other Christian activities and listen to Christian messages. This will then increase our knowledge in the word so we can do what the Lord requires of us.

Another obstacle to being doers of the word is disobedience. There are some Christians who really know and understand the word but when it’s time to apply the word, they willingly disobey. For example, our Lord Jesus taught us that if someone should slap us, we don’t have to retaliate (Matthew 5:39). However, I know some Christians who will say, “I know what the Lord Jesus said but if anyone should slap me, I will return the favor.” There are many examples in this regard.

Last but not the least, what really prevent many Believers from doing the word is what I have termed, “The 3P’s (Pride, Prejudice, provocation).” It takes a lot of humility to accept the engrafted word of God and make necessary changes to our lives. However, when you full of pride, you can’t accept corrections from the word, and you can’t receive anyone the Lord sends to deliver His message to you. Prejudice is preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. For example, a woman who has been exposed to the worldly view of marriage i.e. husband and wife are at the same level and both are joint heads of the family. If this woman should come to Christ and is being taught the word of God says, the husband is the head of the family, she will really find it difficult to understand.

The final “P” is provocation. There are some people who rather becomes offended by the word of God and as a result don’t accept and obey. The Pharisees and many other Israelites didn’t accept the message of our Lord Jesus because they were offended by it (Matthew 13:57, Matthew 15:12).

Beloved in the Lord, I believe that if we overcome these obstacles, we will not just be hearers of the word deceiving ourselves but rather live and do everything according the word of God. In so doing, our lights will continue to shine so bright in this world and many will come to Christ.

Prayer Point:

Let’s thank God for the answers to the prayers we have already received. Let’s ask God to give us the hunger and thirst for His word. Let’s take authority over demonic spirit of pride, prejudice, provocation, and any form of disobedience blocking us from being doers of the word.
