Title: The essence of life

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:
Fear God and keep His commandments. For this is manโs all. Ecclesiastes 12:13
There is a saying that experience is the best teacher. There is a great deal of truth in this statement depending on which angle you see it from. Thus, the best person to teach you something is the one who has done it before. I remember in school, when we face difficulties in certain subjects we go to friends who have a better understanding of it, if not the tutor himself/herself.
Though some subjects may seem complex and challenging but there is something more challenging than any subject, and that is life itself. Hence, if we want to understand life it is worth seeking from someone who has actually lived life to the fullest. Throughout Biblical history and even in our generation, there is no one who enjoyed the pleasures of life than King Solomon. He had everything a person will need to be please himself on earth: wives and concubines, servants, riches, fame, wisdom and understanding, and many more. I don’t think Solomon lacked anything in life as a human being.
However, it is eye-opening to read in the book of Ecclesiastes that all this is vanity and a chasing after wind. Solomon, the writer of the book emphasised that the struggle of men with the intention of acquiring all these things is vanity. What, then, is the essence of life? Solomon concluded the book of Ecclesiastes with our verse for today. The essence of life as he stated is to fear God and keep His commandments. That is all that is required of man.
It may sound simple but a lot goes into fearing God and obeying His commandments. Beloved, all the things we are seeking and striving for are just temporary. The eternal life after this temporal life is what we should set our sights on. Apart from it being longer, it will also either be spent in pleasure or torture. What will determine this is whether a person lived to achieve the things of this life to the neglect of the essence of life or a person lived to fulfil the essence of life. It should also be noted that, if we set our eyes on living to fear God and obey His commandments, all what we seek on this earth will come as by-products (Matthew 6:33). I pray that we understand why we are living and make the best choice to follow Jesus Christ. May we be blessed!
Prayer:
Let us thank God for the answers to our prayers. Let us pray that the fear of God and obedience to His commandments will be our focus on earth.
