In recent times, the Lord has been reminding His church about His instruction for us to occupy till He comes. Because we will all give an account for whatever has been entrusted to us, seeking to understand His mind concerning this subject is therefore a worthwhile activity.

The word occupy as used in Luke 19:13 was translated from the Greek word Pragmateuomai, which means “to busy oneself with, i.e. to trade”. Though this meaning has a business undertone, it is actually a military word. So, for proper understanding, let’s consider the usage of the word in the Old Testament. In their movement to the promise land from Egypt, there came a point when God instructed the children of Israel to take possession of the land of Canaan. In Leviticus 20:24, God said to the Children of Israel “But I have said unto you, Ye shall inherit their land, and I will give it unto you to possess it, a land that floweth with milk and honey: I am the Lord your God, which have separated you from other people.” The word “Possess” as used in this verse is from the Hebrew “yรขrash yรขrรชsh”, and it’s primitive root means “to occupy”. Therefore, when Jesus Christ said “occupy till I come”, He is saying “take possession of that which I have given to you”.

What has He given us? This is a good question at this point, for we need to know what He has given before we can possess or occupy it. Firstly, He has given us Himself, for we have been called heirs of God (Rom.ย  8:17), and He is the Kingdom (Luke 12:32)). Secondly, the service and ministry in the kingdom (2 Corย  4:1). Thirdly, the nations (Psalm 2:8) etc. In fact, all that God says is ours from the word is what He has given to us. This was what He represented as talents in our scriptural verse of today.

Now, just as the children of Israel had to wage war against the inhabitants of the land before they could take possession (to occupy) that which God has already given by His word, there’s a warfare we must do to occupy all He has given to us. However, it’s a fight from victory and not for victory. For we are more than conquerors (Rom. 8:37)

Prayer Point:

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask for the grace to occupy till He comes.
