Title: A Teachable Heart
By: Daniel Peter
Date: 26.03.2024
He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.ย Acts 18:26 NIV
When Jesus Christ walked this earth, the only thing He directly requested His followers to learn from Him was His gentleness and humility (Matthew 11:29). Humility is a quality that enables us to yield in obedience to the word of God and man, as Jesus was said to have “Humbled” himself, and became obedient to the instruction of the Father to die at the cross (Phil. 2: 3 -11). This means, that without humility, we can’t do the will of God.
One of the attributes of humility is “having a teachable heart”. This is an ability that enables one to receive knowledge from one who may be lower in stature than him or her, or in an area in that one has expertise. For example, Apollos was described to be eloquent and mighty in the scriptures, he taught the way accurately (Acts 18:24 – 25). Despite his reputation and exploits in the ministry, he humbled himself to be taught by Aquilla and Priscilla (Acts 18:26), when they noticed he needed help in an area. Now, Aquilla and Priscilla were mere converts of Paul with no obvious reputation among the Christians. I mean, there may be people Apollos could easily despise, yet he was not embarrassed when he was called to be taught the way more perfectly.
Jesus Christ was one who first modelled the importance of being teachable. For despite He is God and knew all things, he was found in the temple listening to the doctors of the law and asking them questions (Luke 2:46-52). Are you teacheable? Can you receive from those you perceive as lower than you? One of the importance of having a teachable heart is that it helps you to believe the Truth. This quality of being teachable was what the Bereans had when they listened eagerly to what Paul and Silas taught them and they searched the scriptures daily to confirm what they were being taught. As a result of this attitude, the scriptures recorded that many of them believed (Acts 17:11-12).
Many have not made progress in the faith because they are not teachable. You can’t yield to obey an instruction that you have not been taught (that you lack knowledge of). The way to develop a teachable heart is to ask God for help.
