“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)
A true friendship is characterized by loyalty, care, concern and tolerance and these are the major qualities that make it strong and admirable. Nevertheless, different people have their understanding of the word “Friend” and therefore, maintain different impressions about it. A friend by common definition is a person with whom one has a firm bond of mutual affection, love or care. There are several types of friendship nowadays, some are for mundane benefits, others are for sexual or amorous expectations, and there are genuine friendships that are of godly extract. We all have friends at one point in our lives, whether casual, best or intimate. The key success to in a good friendship is care, love, honesty and sincerity.
A good friend is he/she who impacts our life positively, more especially our godly life. There are instances of good friendships in the scripture like that between Job and his friends, Elijah and Elisha, Ruth and Naomi etc. None however can equate to that of Jesus and us. The best friend we can all have is Jesus! He is such a friend that we can confide all our life challenges without reservation and he forever cares. There is absolutely nothing he cannot do for us if He could give His life for our redemption, if He could be humiliated for our justification (Matthew 26:67-68 ), if He accepted to bear all our infirmities, then He will surely carry us through whatever circumstance we find ourselves. No matter the size of our failures and shortcomings, He is always there to make sure that we surmount them all by giving us a helping hand (Hebrews 7:25). Even after His death and ascension, He ever lives to intercede for us. Jesus is a true friend indeed, He isn’t a fair-weather friend as some people.
It is more than a privilege to be a friend of Jesus. He sticks around long enough to know when we are sad, broken and frustrated to give joy, satisfaction, peace, success and above all the gift of salvation. May we continue to enjoy the adorable friendship of Jesus even as we are passing through our life journey.
Prayer point:
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let us also ask Him to strengthen our friendship with Him so that we will continue to enjoy all the benefits of a relationship with Him.
