5 โI am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you[b] will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. John 15:5-8
You probably have known people who once believed but today are no longer professing Christians? You might be asking what happened? How come?
The answer lies in the emboldened part of the opening verse above. “If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out โฆ”. From that, you see that we are in dire need of abiding in Christ to bear fruit and not be cast out, that is, lose our salvation. How, then, can we abide in Christ?
As you probably know, abiding in Christ is keeping our faith alive in Christ. Our faith is built and sustained in Christ through a number of things, notably prayer and eating of the word of God.
Just as it took believing to come into the body of Christ, it still takes believing to stay in the body of Christ. You can’t stop believing and expect to still be part of the body of Christ. Freely you came in freely, so freely you can sign out.
However, it’s not the Lord’s will that you experience this immeasurable gift and then denounce it. The Holy Spirit dwells in us for that very purpose: to keep us, help us. Despite this, God doesn’t take away our free will, so it’s our choice and partly our responsibility to keep on choosing Him till the end.
The bible says the righteous live by faith (Romans 1:17). It also says in Romans 10:17: “… faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”. Mathew 4:4 says:
Jesus answered, โIt is written: โMan shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.โ[a]โ. That means we literally need to continually eat the word of God to keep our faith alive, which is what makes us believers.
This call to continually eat the word of God is not just an encouragement to be a better Christian; it’s a serious warning that our very salvation hinges on our faith, and our faith needs the word of God to stay alive.
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for the word today. Let’s ask the Holy Spirit to help us keep hearing the word of God as often as possible.
