Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.ย Proverbs 4:7 NKJV

Wisdomโ€”defined as insight, foresight, and obedience to divine instructionโ€”is declared in Scripture to be the principal thing we must pursue (Proverbs 4:7). Its importance cannot be overstated, for it is through wisdom that kings rule and territories are governed (Proverbs 8:15). The question then arises: How do we access this wisdom?

In Jobโ€™s lamentation during his time of trial, he devoted an entire chapter (Job 28) to reflect on the mystery of wisdom. After describing how man has discovered the hidden treasures of the earth, he asked, โ€œBut where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?โ€ (Job 28:12 NKJV). This rhetorical question highlights that wisdom is not found among the living; it is not sourced from the natural realm.

Scripture provides the answer: โ€œFor the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understandingโ€ (Proverbs 2:6). God alone is the source of true wisdom. We access it when we listen to Him and meditate on His Word. Jesus said, โ€œโ€ฆeveryone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise manโ€ฆโ€ (Matthew 7:24 NIV). Wisdom is therefore the product of revelation received and instruction obeyed.

Another way we receive wisdom is through asking in faith and expressing thanksgiving. Solomon accessed wisdom by asking when he encountered God in a dream (1 Kings 3:1โ€“15). James affirms this pattern when he said: โ€œIf any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to youโ€ (James 1:5 NIV). Thanksgiving should accompany our request as an expression of faith that God has heard and granted our petition.

Wisdom is also imparted through the laying on of hands. When Moses laid his hands on Joshua, the spirit of wisdom came upon him (Deuteronomy 34:9). Additionally, wisdom is poured out when we respond to Godโ€™s rebuke with repentance (Proverbs 1:23).

Furthermore, we gain wisdom when we listen to godly counsel. When we humble ourselves to receive divine counsel through God-ordained vessels, we position ourselves to walk in wisdom. Ultimately, the measure of wisdom we receive is determined by our spiritual capacityโ€”our capacity to love and yield to God.

Prayer Point

Let us thank God for His Word today. Let us ask Him to increase our capacity to receive wisdom and to help us diligently engage every channel He has provided for accessing His wisdom.
