So, if you think you are standing firm,ย be careful that you donโ€™t fall!ย  1 Corinthians 10: 12ย

ย

There is aย wise saying that the man on the ground fears no fall. Those who have surrendered to a sinful way of life are in the devil’s camp; they are on the ground, so to speak. On the other hand, if you are in Christ, believing the word and practicing it, then you are standing. But as the opening verse says โ€œ… if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you donโ€™t fall!โ€. How can we be careful not to fall?ย

The first thing I would mention is awareness. The bible says โ€œBe sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:โ€ 1 Peter 5:8. So we should be aware that we have an enemy, meaning we are in a constant battle. If he is not devouring or destroying us, then he would keep attacking us. He devours us when we are living in perpetual sin because sooner than later, we will start paying the wages of that sin which is death in different forms (Romans 6:23). When you are in Christ you are safe in the sense that the devil canโ€™t harm you unless God intends to use that supposed harm for a greater good in your life and those of others. So, in general, how the devil attacks you in Christ is by partnering with the desires our flesh to tempt us into sin. The sin itself is not the major thing that takes you away from the safety of Christ but persistence in it which has the potential to harden your heart and cause you to denounce Christ (Hebrews 3:12-14).ย

We are careful not to fall by abiding in the word of God. Scripture says โ€œ…The righteous shall live by faithโ€ Galatians 3:11. And again it says โ€œ… faithย comesย by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.โ€ Romans 10:17. It means that we live righteously by hearing the word of God because you wonโ€™t believe what you donโ€™t hear, and you wonโ€™t live what you donโ€™t believe. The devil is constantly waiting for the vulnerable moments to launch an attack and the way we fight back, and attack is by the word in our heart and our mouth. As Christ reiterates โ€œ…Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of Godโ€ Matthew 4:4 Deut. 8:3. So if you think you are standing, keep hearing the word again and again.ย

Other points include prayer, regular fasting, brotherly support, acknowledging grace of God, speaking in tongues and thanksgiving. After all the preaching and the hearing, we still fall into sin (1 John 1:8, Romans 3:23), however as scripture says โ€œ… a righteousย manย may fall seven times and rise againโ€. So, the last pointย is on standing up again quickly as soon as you fall by repenting and asking for mercy and grace. He is a faithful rewarder. He rewards in this life and in the life to come (Proverbs 11:31, Hebrews 11:6).ย

ย

Prayer Pointย

Letโ€™s thank the merciful God for His word. Letโ€™s pray for the grace to stand tall and firm in Jesusโ€™s name. Amen. ย
