Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. Matthew 5:48 KJV
As the alarm for the end of the ages is sounding, there’s need for us to take the instruction to be perfect seriously, as our Lord Jesus Christ is coming to reward each one according to His or her work (Rev. 22:12). Apart from the rewards, the nature of the end time army God is raising is one that was described in Revelation 14: 5 as “without fault before the throne of God”. That is, they are perfect. Therefore, if we need a part in the End Time Army, we have to seek to be perfect.
The concept of being perfect is one that is related to our character. Before the instruction in the New Testament, Abraham was one instructed to be perfect (Gen. 17:1), and Job and Noah were people described as perfect in their generation (Gen. 6:9, Job 1:1). Now, if these men were able to attain perfection in their time, what about us in the New Covenant? It is much more possible and God expects this from all of us.
When Jesus Christ gave the instruction for us to be perfect, He made us understand that the instruction to love is not one that should be expressed only towards those that are kind towards us, also towards our enemies and the undeserving (Matt. 5:43-48). Again He further explained that His concept of love is not one that is just based on emotions as the world call love, but doing the instructions of scriptures (Matt. 22:36-40, Gal. 5:14).ย So perfection in Christ is the expression of the God kind of love towards all.
Now that we know what perfection is, how do we attain it? The Grace to attain perfection is found in the presence of God (Gen. 6:8), and the key to it is “walking before God” as He revealed to Abraham in Genesis 17:1. We walk before God by being conscious of His ever abiding presence. As we walk with God as one who is ever present with us, He gives grace to live in complete obedience to Him. This was the reason Joseph was able to overcome the temptation posed by Portipher’s wife. For He said “how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? (Gen. 39:9-12)“, because He saw God with Him.
We practice His presence by communing and intimating with Him all through our day.
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him for the grace to always be conscious of Him and to express His love towards all.
