In His sermon on the mount, Jesus Christ instructed His followers to be perfect, just like God is perfect (Matthew 5:48). The word “perfect” is from the Greek word “teleios,” which means complete, and it refers to our character. In essence, Christ was instructing us to exhibit God’s character in a complete measure.
This may seem like a Herculean task, but the very fact that He is instructing us to be perfect is because He has given us the ability to. This ability didn’t just come when we gave our lives to Christ, but when He said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” (Genesis 1:26), at creation. The phrase “our image” means the character of God. This implies that the ability to reflect Him fully has been in us since creation. For this reason, men like Noah, Job, and Abraham all attained perfection even before the coming of Christ (see Genesis 6:9, Job 1:1, Genesis 17:1). Now, if men before the coming of Christ could attain perfection, what about us in Christ?
The key to attaining perfection in our character was revealed in God’s statement to Abraham in Genesis 17:1, when He said, “I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.” Therefore, the key to becoming perfect is to walk before God. Walking before God means living with the consciousness that God is with you, and He sees what you do. This was what Joseph possessed, and he said no to Potiphar’s wife’s offer for sex, for he said, “How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?” (Genesis 39:9 KJV), seeing God with him.
Our consciousness of God’s presence with us increases when we take time often to fellowship with Him (moment-by-moment intimacy). In that fellowship, we also receive empowerment to do His will.

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us abide in fellowship with Him and increase our consciousness of His presence.
