Title โ Because of sin
1st Samuel 3:1 – Now the boy Samuel ministered to the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no widespread revelation.ย
Recently, whilst reading the book of 1st Samuel 3, something struck me. The Bible says the word of God was rare in those days. How scary can it be when God decides not to speak to His children anymore! As I pondered on this verse, the Spirit gave me an understanding of the reasons why God was not speaking to the people.
The vessels through which the word came were contaminated. God often speaks to His children through His prophets or judges (as it usually happened in the Old Testament). In those days, God did nothing without revealing His plan to His servants, the prophets (Amos 3:7). Thus, whether God intended to bring good or harm, or whether He wanted to reveal the plots of the enemy, it came through the prophets/priests/judges. In the days of Samuel, the young man, the two sons of Eli, Hophni, and Phinehas, were the priests of the Lord at that time (1st Samuel 1:3). However, these men did not honour the office they held nor the God they represented. They had no regard for God, neither did they know Him (1st Samuel 2:12). Hophni and Phinehas contaminated the sacrifices offered to God and slept with the women who worked at the tent of meeting (1st Samuel 2:22). The sins of the two men were grave before the Lord (1st Samuel 2:17). Hence, when Hophni and Phinehas, who were supposed to be the channel through which Godโs word came to the people, contaminated themselves with sin, the word of God ceased coming.
Now, there are no sins without consequences. Due to the sins of the two men (the leaders), Israel suffered a heavy defeat in the hands of the Philistines in battle, and about four thousand men died in that battle. When Israel went for battle again, they were defeated, and the Ark of God was captured by the Philistines this time round. Thus, when God stops speaking, His children become prone to the attacks of the enemy.
Sin is the only thing that can come between us and God. As the Bible emphasizes in Isaiah 59:1-2, โthe Lordโs hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; nor His ear heavy, that it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God, and your sins have hidden His face from youโ. As we go through today and ponder on this message, letโs make every effort to let go of sin so that we can hear clearly from our Father in heaven. May God help and bless us.
Prayer:
Let us thank God for His word and the answers to our prayers. Let us also pray for the strength and grace to let go of sin so that we can hear clearly from God and have a beautiful fellowship with Him.
