Title: Becoming Like God

And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lordโ€™s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.ย 2 Corinthians 3:18 NIV

Godโ€™s statement when deciding to create man gives a revelation of His eternal plan for mankind. He said โ€œLet us make mankind in our image, in our likeness…(Gen. 1:26)โ€.ย Becoming like Him has been His intent ever since the beginning, and it is still His will for us in the New Covenant.

At his creation, though Adam bore the image of God, He had not attained the fulness of the likeness of God. Godโ€™s likeness was placed in certain trees: The tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil were specifically mentioned. This was the reason when Adam ate of the tree of good and evil, Godโ€™s statement was โ€œThe man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil (Gen.3:22)โ€. And of the tree of life He saidย โ€œhe (Adam) must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever (Gen.3:22)โ€,ย indicating that Adam and Eve would have attained to the likeness of God in the ability to live forever if they had taken from the tree of life. Though the circumstance that this conversation happened was a result of Adam’s fall, it gives a revelation of the mind of God.

The reason why death occurred when Adam ate from the tree of good and evil was that he ate the fruit out of disobedience, not because the tree wasnโ€™t good for food. And the reason why God prevented Adam from accessing the tree of life after his fall was that Adam would have lived forever in that death state and become like the devil, irredeemable, but God had plans to redeem Him back. The redemption of man by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is a restoration to God’s original intent, which is, mankind becoming like Him. At salvation, the spirit of man comes alive, and God becomes one with our spirit (John 17:21), meaning, thereโ€™s no difference between us (the spirit of a believer is exactly like God). However, the make-up of man goes beyond spirit, instead, he is tripartite: spirit, soul, and body (1 Thess. 5:23). Godโ€™s will is for His likeness that has been perfected in our spirit to permeate our souls and be reflective in our bodies. At this, the identity of our lives will come from our state in the spirit. The entire process of making the identity of the spirit to be seen in the state of our soul and body is called transformation (Rom. 12:2, 2Cor. 3:18).

The transformation process to becoming like Jesus Christ happens when we behold Him. Scriptures say,ย โ€œBut we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord the Spirit (2Cor. 3:18)โ€.ย As we see the glory of the Lord revealed in the life of Jesus Christ, we are given the grace to become like Him. We see Jesus through reading scriptures, in the place of prayer through the visions and understanding He gives to us, in the life of people and His creation (Rom.1:20). The more time we spend with Him (In His consciousness), contemplating His glory, the more we become more like Him.

Prayer Point:ย

Letโ€™s thank God for His word today. Letโ€™s ask Him to help the body of Christ see Him as He truly is.
